Concord Elementary School is one of six elementary schools in the Edina School District, serving students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Students follow an A.S.K. model, emphasizing three qualities: attitude, skills and knowledge. District personnel believe that student self-esteem has a direct connection to learning and healthy decision-making.
The Concord Carnival is aimed at getting students, parents and teachers to have fun together as a Concord Elementary School community as well as raise money for the school. This year's carnival had a goal of raising $18,000.
Today, our Volunteer Spotlight shines on Lisa S., who utilized VolunteerSpot's online signup sheets to organize volunteers for this year's Concord Carnival!

How many volunteers did you need for the carnival?
Currently, we needed 230 people to volunteer at our carnival the night of the event. We are thinking of adding all school PTO events. It is not up to me but I am an advocate.
What other activities are you involved in at Concord Elementary?
I am a scout advancement chair, soccer coach, and Junior League Chair
How did you get interested in volunteering?
I felt fortunate to have a job and health care before I had kids. I wanted to give back since my family went through some difficult times when I was young. When I had kids and could afford not to work, I still wanted to give back. Being involved at my child’s school allows me to keep tabs on him, get to know the staff and students, and feel a like part of the community. I really have a good handle on the issues our school and community faces.
What’s one piece of advice you have for parent volunteers out there?
Do what you can, when you can. Some years you can do more, others less. Don’t over commit. It takes a village and there is always give and take. Don’t feel guilty and do the best that you can. If you can’t be at events, know that your kids are still cared for, supported and loved.
Why did you decide to use VolunteerSpot?
It was recommended in a magazine I read and it was easy to use. I liked that parents could sign up online at night, when the kids are in bed and they have time to check their schedules.
Anything else you’d like our readers to know about your school, event, or volunteering?
Plan ahead, make a schedule of the tasks that you need to accomplish, and delegate when possible. Also, make different level jobs for your volunteers so tthey can pick a job that suits their volunteer availability. whether it's lots of time, or one hour a month.
