The life of an athletic student can be a busy one. From long practices to long bus rides with a pile of homework waiting at the end of their exhausting physical efforts. Finding a way to support their lifestyle while still respecting the flow of the family unit is a balance that takes years of trial & error.
Smooth transition from school to practice
- Discuss with the athletic student what they need
- whether they are an elementary aged youth league or a star high school player, every athlete needs to know themselves well
- when is down time
- when is homework time
- what can be accomplished while commuting?
- whether they are an elementary aged youth league or a star high school player, every athlete needs to know themselves well
Planning healthy snacks
Knowing what the athletic student is depleting from their daily diet with rigorous exercise can help guide the healthy snacks plan.
- make a list of healthy snacks they like, then stock the fridge & pantry with those choices
- encourage them to pack their own sports bag, this helps them begin to understand the steps involved with being prepared and making good decisions before they're hungry
- hop on over to my Nutrition for Athletes post and pick up some more tips there too
Getting the gear clean
Laundry is such an uphill battle already! Then add in gear that needs washed multiple times a week?
- Stay aware of the schedule, when does the game day gear need to be clean by?
- Duplicate if necessary, is your schedule too full for late night washes? Consider purchasing used gear for practices to keep the game gear clean.
- Teach the athletic student how to use the machines, by fifth or sixth grade these kiddos are capapble of getting their own stuff through the wash
So many of these tips were born right in my own home, it is important to figure out what works best in your family and build on that! I would love to further the discussion over on the VolunteerSpot Facebook Page ...
What systems are you using or creating for your athletic students this back to school season?
