Volunteer Spotlight | Jen Turner, LSC, PTO Parent, Chicago, IL
Room moms and dads are amazing. Teachers depend on them to help with everything from the classroom holiday party, to field trip coordination, to classroom readers. Room parents are an invaluable resource, as they make the classroom a richer place. When parents volunteer in the classroom, kids take notice. They appreciate the extra adult presence, and are enriched by being exposed to adults other than just the teacher.

Tell us about your role as a parent volunteer leader.
I serve as room parent in both of my sons classrooms.
How do you use VolunteerSpot to coordinate your parent volunteers?
I usually use VolunteerSpot about 2-3 times per month to schedule/coordinate parents for crafts, or field trips.
What other activities are you involved in as a volunteer or volunteer leader?
I am the chairperson of my children's elementary School Council, I am also a Pastor's wife and very active in the women's ministry at my church.
What’s one piece of advice you have for parent volunteers out there?
Take you time while planning, be as detailed and thorough as possible, and answer every question that parents will want to ask about any activity, to do list, to bring list or responsibility, before they have an opportunity to ask!
Why did you decide to use VolunteerSpot?
Because the process is seamless; it allows me and the entire classroom to see what is still needed. It is a great way for every parent (working or stay at home) to feel like an important part of the classroom experience.
Anything else you’d like our readers to know about your school, event, or volunteering?
Volunteering in my children's classes and school is one of my greatest joys! It would not be as joyful if I did not have VolunteerSpot to make the coordinating of events so headache free.
