Attending a conference this summer? Don't miss our best ideas, tips and pointers to help you get the most out of your trip:
Go Portable: For connecting to the web, opt for lighter-weight tablets (think iPad or Surface) or even netbooks as opposed to clunkier laptops that can leave your shoulder begging for mercy after a day's worth of walking around with that heavy bag. Bring a flash drive or two with you for computing/saving work from a stationed computer in your conference center.
Go Social: Get the conference app if there is one and tag all the sessions that interest you, even if the times conflict; you can make the decision on the spot, and it’s great to have a backup if a particular session is overcrowded. Follow the conference hashtag on twitter for updates and announcements. Immediately follow/like companies and people on facebook and twitter.
Go Professional: If networking is your conference goal, be prepared to give (and get) business cards. Pack a small hole punch, sharpie and o-ring to quickly collect business cards given to you and make quick notes on the back with follow-ups and key points that will help you recall each specific person. Make sure to include your own twitter handle with your name, phone, website on your business card or go ultra-techy with a QR code people can scan to retrieve full details from your card.
Go Essential: When in doubt, have a pain releiver and quick blood sugar pick-me-up on hand. You never know when a tylenol and granola bar is going to save your day, but you'll be glad you had one on hand instead of having to search around for somewhere to buy it.
Go Intentional: Internet connections can get quickly overwhelmed by the 'connected crowds' at large conferences, so consider bringing your own hotspot to stay online. Charge your devices every chance you get because it's no fun to run out of battery, and bookmark fun ways to de-stress with either fun game or hilarious youtube video for between sessions.
