Tell us about your volunteer program.
I am on our school's PTA committee and my position is Elementary Co-Room Parent Coordinator. In this position, we coordinate and oversee many of the school events that involve classrooms, such as Teacher Appreciation events, fundraisers, teacher snacks, holiday events, etc. In our school, every classroom has a room parent and party parent, from 1 year old through 5th grade. The room parents help to coordinate and communicate with parents about parties, field trips, mission projects, fundraising and assisting the teacher in making copies, helping with projects, etc. Our Room Parents work really hard!
How do you use VolunteerSpot to coordinate your parent volunteers?
I recently used VolunteerSpot to coordinate contributions of snacks, drinks and paper goods for a Teacher Snack Week that would serve about 75 teachers. It was a lifesaver! It made it super easy to request specific items and provided real time results so that items wouldn't be duplicated. It allowed me to send out updates and reminders, which proved to be super helpful! All of our items were covered and delivered on the appropriate days. I have always tried to give my very best effort when I volunteer and this tool allowed us to have a beautiful and complete presentation to make our teachers feel loved and appreciated. Without this simplified form of communication, I am afraid we may not have had such good results.
What other activities are you involved in as a volunteer or volunteer leader?
I am also a grade level coordinator for our middle school, 6th grade. My job is to communicate with parents about events, fundraisers, etc. I also teach a middle school, small group Bible study and volunteer in the children's ministry at my church.
What’s one piece of advice you have for parent volunteers out there?
If you're gonna do this, do it with your whole heart. Be well organized and prepared, recruit help and use the tools and resources available to make each activity a success. Our teachers work so hard... they deserve our very best in love and appreciation.
Why did you decide to use VolunteerSpot?
It was the best way to communicate with parents to minimize e-mails and confusion.
Anything else you’d like our readers to know about your school, event, or volunteering?
Our school has a high level of parent involvement, which makes it a wonderful place to be for the students, parents and teachers.
