The Hanover Garden Club was founded in 1936 and currently has about 200 members. They have come together to promote knowledge and a love of gardening, to fund and plant town gardens, and to educate residents on conservation issues in this corner of northern New England.
While their growing season may be short, the Garden Club nourishes members’ appetites for growing things and designing with plant material during all 12 months of the year!
Today our spotlight shines on Larry Litten, who uses VolunteerSpot's online signup sheets to organize club volunteers.

Please tell us about your organization and your volunteer needs.
In addition to monthly meetings with speakers on horticultural topics, the Club funds and plants public gardens in downtown Hanover, New Hampshire, contributes funds for garden books to local libraries, and provides money for a camp scholarship.
The Club has a greenhouse where geraniums from the town gardens are over-wintered, and seedlings are started, for a spring plant sale. The sale produces much of the funding for the activities noted above. Approximately 20 volunteers assist in the processing of the geraniums, the planting of the seedlings, and the watering of all.
Explain how you use VolunteerSpot to coordinate these volunteers.
Every two months when the greenhouse is active, volunteers are recruited for the next 8 weeks to check and water plants.
What’s one piece of advice you have for volunteers or their leaders out there?
Use VolunteerSpot to manage your requests for volunteers and remind them of their commitments, but be prepared for a transition period and to do some hand-holding of an occasional tech-leary volunteer (or at least provide some commiseration!).
Why did you decide to use VolunteerSpot?
One of our watering volunteers failed to show up a couple of years ago, and because young plants don't take kindly to a lack of water and a plant sale without plants would be a bust, I went searching on-line for a means of efficiently reminding people of their watering dates. I found VolunteerSpot.
